How Music Sounds Without the Trickery

10 Dec 2009

There’s been a backlash towards the overuse of Cher-autotune-pitch correction in music, even a petition to tone down the ‘abuse’ in the TV show Glee.

There won’t be any petition aimed at Reh Dogg, who clearly wants to keep his flow and melody free of modern gimmickry.

Why Do I Cry is an emotional plea from the Bob Dylan of Hip Hop. The video includes shots of moody showering, running through a forest, and a bit of go-karting.

Reh Dogg has a flash website where you can send him money. And don’t ignore his newly released Crunk Mix.

A batting cage. An Indian in a bomber jacket. A very Robert Frostian winter wood. Fish tanks. I smell a viewer’s choice award. Or something.

And oh shit. He’s got twins on the way and something about California as well.

Interestingly, Reh Dogg has cited Robert Frost as one of his favourite rapper-poets of all time. Hence the allusion to Frost's 'The Road Not Taken' in the video imagery. Nicely spotted.

3:10 is a particularly special moment.

I nearly hurt myself laughing during the initial shower scene, but the bit with the completely undramatic roll over/gun loading finished me off. And he misses his gun. Surely he could have ordered another take?

@6000 There’s a lot of specialness going on in this.

@Ciro ‘Keeping it real’ is just a cliche nowadays, but in the underground rap game, that’s how they live.

I’m sure the director suggested doing it again, and Reh was like “Nah, I nailed that scene.” So the director decided not to argue with a man holding a gun, who may also have been high at the time.
